چکیده

The results of banding of the pulmonary artery in 111 children with cardiac malformations associated with excessive pulmonary blood flow are presented. Thirty-three of these children died, eleven either of late band complications or after a corrective operation. Patients with ventricular septal defect represent the largest group of malformation among the 111 patients. The overall mortality for banding in patients with isolated ventricular septal defect is 10%, as compared to 36% in patients with ventricular septal defect complicated by

Indications, Results and Mortality of Pulmonary Artery Banding Procedure: a Brief Review and Five- year Experiences

Background Pulmonary artery banding (PAB) is a technique of palliative surgical therapy used by congenital heart surgeons as a staged approach to operative correction of congenital heart defects. Materials and Methods We report 5- year experiences from January 2011 to January 2016 of Imam Reza Hospital center (a tertiary referral hospital in Mashhad city, North East of Iran) that consist of 50 ...

Usefulness of Percutaneous Transluminal Pulmonary Artery Balloon Angioplasty after Bilateral Pulmonary Artery Banding: Prevention against Additional Surgical Interventions

Objectives: We evaluated the efficacy of balloon dilatation after bilateral pulmonary artery banding for the treatment of severe congenital heart disease that depends on patent ductus arteriosus for systemic circulation. Background: Neonatal cardiopulmonary bypass can cause brain injury, which may result in a severely impaired neurodevelopmental outcome. Hence, we perform bilateral pulmonary ar...

Diminution and closure of large ventricular septal defects after pulmonary artery banding.

In a period of 15 years (1957-1972), 114 infants (51 males, 63 females) with the diagnosis of ventricular septal defect and congestive heart failure underwent pulmonary artery banding at The Children's Hospital Medical Center in Boston. A second study performed in 55 of these revealed the left-to-right shunt through the ventricular septal defect to be greatly diminished in seven and completely ...

Right ventricular targeted gene transfer of a beta-adrenergic receptor kinase inhibitor improves ventricular performance after pulmonary artery banding.

OBJECTIVE Abrupt increases in right ventricular afterload occur after cardiac transplantation and pulmonary artery banding, which can result in right ventricular hypertrophy and dilatation. Right ventricular dysfunction is also accompanied by beta-adrenergic receptor desensitization. We sought to determine whether selective right ventricular expression of a transgene encoding a beta-adrenergic ...

Failure of pulmonary artery banding due to migration of the band.

The value of pulmonary artery banding in relieving symptoms due to large left-to-right shunts in infants has been established by a number of authors (Thompson, Muller, and Dammann, 1958; Dammann, McEachen, Thompson, Smith, and Muller, 1961 ; Therkelsen, Gammelgaard, and Boesen, 1959; Smith and McEachen, 1960; Morrow and Braunwald, 1961 ; Willman, Cooper, Mudd, and Hanlon, 1962; Ochsner, Cooley,...

Management of Iatrogenic Pulmonary Artery Injury during Pulmonary Artery Banding

Pulmonary Artery banding (PAB) is limited to selected patients who cannot undergo primary repair due to complex anatomy, associated co-morbidities, as a part of staged univentricular palliation, and for preparing the left ventricle prior to an arterial switch operation. We report a catastrophic iatrogenic complication in which the pulmonary artery was injured during the PAB. We discuss its mult...
